Five deaths in Sudan caused by a car bomb

Five deaths in Sudan caused by a car bomb

At a military checkpoint near Somalia's presidential palace in the capital, on Tuesday, a car bomb exploded killing at least five people, police said.

Captain Mohamed Hussein said that the explosives were detonated after the soldiers attempted to arrest the car, with the suicide bomber speeding toward the security barrier. Three other people were injured, he added.

Ahmed Ali, a witness, said he had seen the bodies of two soldiers after the outbreak.

Several attacks by the jihadist group Al-Shabab with links to Al-Qaeda have already occurred in this checkpoint and it's one of the several safety barriers that motorists have to cross before reaching the heavily guarded presidential palace.

Al-Shabab has frequently claimed the bombings in Mogadishu but this attack was not immediately vindicated.

The bombing came a few hours after the new prime minister announced his new government with 26 members, and when the fragile central government tries to extend it's influence beyond the capital.

Threats of Al-Shabab attacks are the main challenge for Somalia's new President and former Prime Minister, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, of dual Somali and North American nationality.

The jihadist group has already denounced the new President as an "infidel " and warned the Somalis to support him in his mandate.
